Working on a business Windows XP computer, users were reporting problems with partially visible icons (showing letters only, no graphics).

At the same time, they were reporting problems with most of their applications timing out with unknown errors.

CorruptedUserProfile

These are symptoms of a corrupted user profile.

Event Viewer recorded the following entries:

Windows cannot load the user’s profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service. Event ID 1505

Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.  for C:\Documents and Settings\User1\ntuser.dat. Event ID 1508

The SSDP Discovery Service depends on the HTTP service which failed to start because of the following error: Not enough storage is available to process this command. Event ID 7001

The HTTP service failed to start due to the following error: Not enough storage is available to process this command. Event ID 7000

Here is the solution; this is a 6-Step registry fix.

Here are the entries you need to update or create:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Value name: PoolUsageMaximum
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value data: 60

Value name: PagedPoolSize
Data type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Hex
Value data: 0xFFFFFFFF

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters

Value Name: MaxWorkItems
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 65535 (decimal)

Value Name: MaxRawWorkItems
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 512 (decimal)

Value Name: MaxFreeConnections
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 100 (decimal)

Value Name: MinFreeConnections
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 32 (decimal)

This is not needed but it may help (just in case):

Re-apply full security permissions to ‘SYSTEM’ on the profile folder.
- Go to ‘C:\Documents and Settings\User1
- Right-Click on the folder and go to ‘Sharing and Security’
- Click on the security tab and make sure that SYSTEM has full permissions.
- If SYSTEM is not there, add it and then give full permissions

I was isolating a slow boot time on a laptop that was running Windows XP. A normal reboot was simply taking about 5 minutes or more (not good).

Uninstalling old applications did not help; tweaking advanced memory settings in order to improve performance didn’t work either.

In MSCONFIG while checking the SERVICES and STARTUP tabs I noticed that under the BOOT tab there is an “Advanced Options”.

Slow-Boot1

Slow-Boot2

Here you can check NUMPROC and MAXMEM.

NUMPROC is simply the number of processors you want to assign during boot time.

MAXMEMO is the amount of memory I wanted to allocate during boot time (in my case I accepted the default 2048).

The boot time on this laptop now takes only 92 seconds (Sweet).

I was trying to configure outlook (for an EXCHANGE user) and the following error message was showing up:

Microsoft Office Outlook: There was an error locating one of the items needed to complete this operation. It might have been deleted.

Outlook-Error

In order to fix this problem all you have to do is simply delete the file MAPISVC.INF (Make sure you close outlook first).

That’s it !!!!!!

Secure Password Checker

Here is a simple site that determines how long it would take a regular desktop PC to crack your password. Hopefully it will encourage people to use more secure passwords.

Password
I tested my own password and it said it would take about 4 days to be cracked.

Ouch!!!! And I thought I had a strong password.
I’m going back to the drawing board.

HDBaseT Technology

New technology known as HDBaseT transfers audio and video signals over ordinary RJ-45 ethernet cables.

HDBaseT will be able to deliver full-HD video, audio, Web connectivity, and power over one cable simultaneously.

HDBaseT
It supports cables up to 100 meters long and can also carry 100 watts of power via the cable. HDBaseT devices may ship later this year.

The HDMI cable isn’t dead just yet, an updated HDMI specification is expected soon also.

On a previous post I gave some guidance on how to isolate the annoying problem of downgrading a computer from VISTA to XP.

Well, I have a much better approach now.

Just take the hard drive out from the computer, connect it to another computer via your IDE/SATA to USB adapter and reformat the drive (NTFS & Quick Format).

Once reformatted, put the drive back in again and proceed with your XP installation. Using this approach requires no special SATA drivers for drive and the installation of XP is no longer stopped by this annoying message.

So I had a user reporting problems moving folders in outlook.

This is the error message he was receiving with a simply move of a folder:

CannotMove

Cannot move the items. Cannot move or copy folders. Cannot move folder. A top-level folder cannot be moved to one of its subfolders. Or, you may not have appropriate permissions for the folder. To check your permissions for the folder, right-click the folder, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.

Here is the solution:

This is very simple to fix, just create a new fresh profile for the user.
- Control Panel
- Mail
- Profiles

If there are other profiles there, do not delete them until you feel comfortable that the new profile is indeed working perfectly fine.

Before you waste your time, here are some of the unnecessary steps I took before I decided to create a new profile:

- Installed latest Office 2007 Service Packs

- Gave full permissions on the folders in outlook

- Started Outlook in safe mode (hold CTRL as you click the outlook icon)

- Checked Symantec Antivirus settings (unchecked the Microsoft Exchange scanning for all clients)

- Compacted the “Offline Folder”

- Renamed the OST file and emptied the Deleted Items folder:

The OST file is located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<profile>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.ost

Hope this helps,

Windows 7 – 175 Million Copies Sold
Windows 7 sells at a rate of 10 licenses per second.
So far Microsoft has sold 175 million copies of Windows 7 since launch.
Microsoft called Windows 7 “the fastest-selling operating system ever.”
It now runs on over 15% of all PCs worldwide.
The OS has certainly outperformed its predecessor, Windows Vista.

Here are two quick videos comparing performance on Hard Disk Drives (HDD) against Solid State Drives (SSD).

Not sure I’m ready to make the jump yet, specially with SSD still reporting such high prices.
